For Second Year, Trinity University Earns Two First-Place Finishes in Recycling Competition among Texas Colleges

SAN ANTONIO – Trinity University has, for the second consecutive year, won two first-place awards in the annual RecycleMania competition among 42 Texas colleges and universities. Trinity also captured third place in another category.

The first-place finishes were in the categories of “food service organics” and “bottles and cans.” Third place was awarded in “corrugated cardboard.”  The results were announced in October at the annual conference of the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling, or STARS. Sharon Curry, systems report writer for Trinity’s Facilities Services Office and an adviser to the campus RecycleMania program, also presented an overview of Trinity’s extensive recycling program and the role that students play in it.

Trinity won two first-places in the 2009 RecycleMania campaign in categories that encourage colleges to limit food waste and to collect plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Earlier this year, Trinity banned the sale in large quantities of individual plastic water bottles as a way to promote environmentally-friendly practices.

Johnathon Loos, a junior from Cypress, Texas, is a double major in biology and environmental studies and president of Students Organized for Sustainability (SOS,) noted that more colleges are signing on to compete in RecycleMania.

“The RecycleMania program is a great way to focus our recycling efforts,” Loos said, adding that if more institutions are promoting recycling, that translates to more materials being recycled world-wide.

Loos and other SOS officers and members encouraged student participation in RecycleMania and coordinated collection and composting efforts by employees of Trinity’s Office of Facilities Services.

This was the third year for Trinity to participate in RecycleMania, and Trinity was the first university to register for the 2011 round of the friendly competition, Curry said.
