Trinity University to Honor Outstanding Alumni
SAN ANTONIO –
Trinity University will honor two outstanding graduates Friday, Jan.
28, with a campus dinner and reception. Kenneth Smith ’65, head of
school at Sandy Spring Friends School, will receive the Spirit of
Trinity Award, and Stephen Butt ’77, senior vice president of the H-E-B
grocery company’s Central Market specialty stores, will be honored as
Trinity’s Distinguished Alumnus.
After 14 years, Smith has retired as head of school at Sandy Spring Friends School, a coeducational college preparatory school near Baltimore. He held prior positions as middle school head at Friends School of Baltimore, and assistant to the headmaster and vice president at Pine Crest School of Ft. Lauderdale. Smith graduated from Trinity with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He continued his education at Princeton Theological Seminary, where he received a master’s in pastoral counseling and philosophy of education. Smith then went on to complete his doctorate at Southern Methodist University. For more than 40 years, on four successive campuses, Smith has worked to build a caring educational community based upon the model of the place he loved most: Trinity University.
Butt is a fourth generation executive at H-E-B. He started in the business as a stock boy in the second grade. He officially joined the company in 1979, after he graduated from Trinity University with a journalism degree. Butt has worked his way up from grocery manager at a small store in Austin. In 1996, Butt headed north on Interstate 35 to Dallas to make several strategic decisions concerning locations and type of retail outlets. In 2003, he was named senior vice president of Central Market and H-E-B stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In 2006, he opened the third Central Market store in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with plans to create the nucleus for a retail network spread throughout North Texas.
Trinity recently awarded Sheridan Chambers ’97 as the 2010-2011 Outstanding Young Alumnus. Chambers, an entrepreneur, has gained valuable experience in starting, running, and growing a business over the past eight years. He has been recognized as the North Chamber Entrepreneur of the Year, listed in the San Antonio Business Journal's Top 40- Under 40, an SATAI Technology Superstar, and included in the list of Texas Monthly’s 30 Multimedia Whizzes Under 30.
