Three Trinity University Alumni Make Modern Healthcare Magazine's '100 Most Powerful People In Healthcare' List
SAN ANTONIO - Three graduates of Trinity University's Health Care Administration program have been named to Modern Healthcare magazine's third annual list of 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare. They include Doug Hawthorne, president and chief executive officer of Texas Health Resources in Dallas; Wayne Smith, chairman of the board, president, and chief executive officer of Community Health Systems Inc. in Brentwood, Tenn.; and Joel Allison, president and chief executive officer of Baylor Health Care System in Dallas.
Also on the list are Hillary Rodham Clinton (No. 3), George W. Bush (No. 4), John Ashcroft (No. 6), and John Kerry (No. 12.) The rankings were published in the magazine's Aug. 23 issue.
Ranked at No. 18, Mr. Hawthorne received his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1969 from Trinity University. He began his career as an intern at Presbyterian Hospital and joined its management team the following year. In 1972, he received a master of science in health care administration also from Trinity University. In 1983, he was named president and CEO of Presbyterian Health Care System of Dallas, and directs the management of a system of North Texas hospitals as well as a retirement village and a network of Primacare Medical Centers; and the Presbyterian Health Care Foundation. He has been honored by the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council, the Trinity University Health Care Administration Alumni Association and the American College of Health Care Executives, and Who's Who in U.S. Healthcare Executives. He also was named Health Care Leader of the 21st Century for the State of Texas by Hospitals magazine, and he is a trustee of Trinity University.
Mr. Smith, who was ranked No. 30, graduated from Auburn University with bachelor's and master's degrees in science. He later received a master's degree in Health Care Administration from Trinity University and also attended the King's Fund college of Hospital Administration in London. He served four years as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Service. Prior to joining Community Health Systems, Mr. Smith worked with Humana Inc. for 23 years in various executive positions. He has been the director of the American Association of Health Plans and has served on the board of the Health Insurance Association of America. This year marks the third time for Mr. Smith to make the "100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare" list.
Mr. Allison, ranked at No. 38, graduated from Baylor University in 1970 with bachelor's degrees in journalism and in religion. In 1973 he earned his master's degree in health care administration from Trinity University. Mr. Allison has been working in health care management for almost three decades. In 1993, he joined Baylor Health Care System. He has been the president/CEO for Baylor Health Care System since 2000; prior to this he served as Baylor's senior executive vice president and chief operating officer. Mr. Allison is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is currently a member of the United Surgical Partners, International Board, and serves on numerous state and local boards within Texas to fulfill his mission to lead an organization that combines ministry and health care in its day-to-day operations.
