Trinity University Drama Professors to Speak on Designing the National Tours of Broadway Musical Fiddler on the Roof

SAN ANTONIO – Sam and Steve Gilliam will discuss “Transitional Designers: Bridging the creative genius of past generations with contemporary design aesthetic” at 6:30 p.m.Thursday, March 3, in the Stieren Theater, located in the Ruth Taylor Theater Building on the campus of Trinity University. The lecture is free and open to the public. Tickets or reservations are not required. A reception will follow the lecture.

The Gilliams will speak about designing three different national tours of the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof, with Topol, Harvey Fierstein, John Preece, and Theodore Bikel in the starring roles.

As a performance artist, storyteller, and educator, Gilliam’s career is rooted in the arts. She earned a Master of Arts degree from Trinity in 1981; however, her career in the professional theater and arts education spans more than 30 years. Her custom designed workshops and performances offer a unique blend of scholarly research and content within theatrical performance.

Steve Gilliam joined the Trinity faculty in 1981 as the scenic designer. Since then, he has designed more than 100 Trinity productions with an equal number of professional designs off campus in theaters throughout the United States. A member of the United Scenic Artists, Local 829, Steve Gilliam spends his summers as the Resident Designer for the St. Louis MUNY.
