Trinity Alumni Association Honors Service-Oriented Students
San Antonio – The Trinity University Alumni Association will honor three
seniors for outstanding service to the University and to San Antonio.
Lindsey Hovland will be
recognized for her dedication and commitment to the University,
Shelley Ramsey will be
awarded for her service to the community, and
Maduka Ogba will be
recognized for his service and commitment to both the University and
community.
The students will receive certificates and $250 at the Honor Awards
Convocation on Saturday, April 2, during Spring Family Weekend. To
receive the awards, exemplary seniors with service over an extended
period of time were nominated by students, faculty, and staff. A panel
of Trinity alumni interviewed finalists and selected the winners.
Hovland, the daughter of John and Belinda Hovland of Colleyville, Texas,
exemplifies leadership. She is a member of the Student Ambassador
program and served as co-chair for two years. In addition, she is the
president of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, and vice president
of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society. She also has been
named to the Dean’s List for four semesters, SCAC Academic Honor Roll
for three years, and received the Presidential Scholarship. Hovland
played on the Trinity women’s basketball team from 2007 to 2010, and is
involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a candidate for
graduation in May and is expected to earn a bachelor of arts in
political science and history before attending law school in the fall.
Ramsey, the daughter of Lee and Mary Leslie Ramsey of Memphis, Tenn., is
a member of the International Sociology Honor Society, Alpha Kappa
Delta, and was presented the Thurman Adkins Award for Leadership in 2009
from the University. Her service to the community is exhibited by her
initiation in organizing the ESL (English as a Second Language) program
to Facilities Services and Aramark dining staff on campus. The program
has grown over the years, and now Trinity students are able to receive
academic credit for teaching ESL to Trinity employees. Ramsey wrote and
received a $2,500 grant from the Clinton Global Initiative to support
the program. Her involvement in promoting community development and
social justice includes Interfaith Worker Justice, Intercultural
Development Research Association, Mexican-American Legal Defense and
Educational Fund, and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid.
Ramsey is a candidate for May graduation and is expected to earn
a bachelor of arts in sociology and pre-law. She will be interning with
Just Neighbors in Washington, D.C. and will be helping provide legal
services to low-income immigrants in the D.C. area.
Ogba, the son of Onyekwere and Ori Ogba of Lagos, Nigeria, is a member
of Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honors Society, National Society of Collegiate
Scholars, Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society, and received the
International Academic Scholarship from the University. His dedicated
involvement to the University and the community includes his positions
as social responsibility director for Trinity University Volunteer
Action Community (TUVAC),
Pi Kappa Alpha recruitment chair, as well as
Academic Honor Council external chair. Ogba also is the co-founder of
the Loon-E Hip-Hop Dance Crew, created to foster a healthy social
atmosphere on campus through dance. He has extensive research
experience in computer science and computational organic chemistry. He
is a candidate for May graduation and is expected to receive a
bachelor’s of science in computer science with a minor in chemistry.
