CLASSICAL STUDIES PROFESSOR TO EXAMINE EARLY HISTORY OF ATHENIAN AKROPOLIS

Jan. 23, 2001 — Jeffrey Hurwit, a professor from the University of Oregon, will unearth the early history of one of the world's classic structures in a presentation titled “The Uses of the Past on the Athenian Akropolis.”  The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the Chapman Center Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.

According to Dr. Hurwit, early theories concerning the Akropolis held that is was built upon the ruins of structures destroyed several years before. That is no longer the case. In his presentation, Dr. Hurwit will show how the older buildings and statues from the earlier structure were actually seamlessly and reverently incorporated into the Athenian Akropolis.

The event is sponsored by the Southwest Texas Archaeological Society and Trinity’s classical studies department.  For more information, call the classical studies department at (210) 999-7653.
