LEADING SPANISH ART SCHOLAR TO GIVE PRESENTATION ON DEVOTIONAL PAINTINGS

Jan. 18, 2001 — Jonathan Brown,  the Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Fine Arts at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, will discuss “The Devotional Paintings of Bartolomé Murillo” at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, in Chapman Center Auditorium.  The noted art scholar will examine how effective a Spanish artist was in painting works of art meant to stir Christian spirituality rather than aesthetic admiration.  Dr. Brown’s presentation, part of the University’s Stieren Arts Enrichment Series, is free and open to the public.

Dr. Brown is a leading expert on Spanish art, particularly painting from the time of Velazquez and other masters of the Golden Age. He was on the faculty at Princeton University before accepting the directorship of the Institute of Fine Arts and has also taught at Oxford and Williams College.  In recognition of his many contributions to the field of Spanish painting, he has received the Gran Cruz de la Orden de Alfonso X el Sabio and the Premio Elio Antonio Nebrija, the latter from the University of Salamanca, for lifetime achievement in Spanish studies.

The Stieren Arts Enrichment Series brings an array of leaders in the fields of art, music, drama, literature, communication, art history, and aesthetics to Trinity.  The series is made possible through an endowment created by Jane and Arthur Stieren of San Antonio.
