Jazz Legend Dave Brubeck to Play at Trinity University |
March 13, 2003 – KRTU-FM 91.7, the radio station of Trinity University, will present a benefit concert featuring “An Evening with Dave Brubeck” at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, at Trinity’s Laurie Auditorium. Tickets for the concert are $35, $25, and $20 and are on sale at the Laurie Auditorium box office and at all Ticketmaster locations. Proceeds from the concert will help fund KRTU-FM's operating costs as well as help replace outdated equipment. A true jazz treasure, Mr. Brubeck has been performing and composing classic jazz works for more than 50 years. After serving in the Army during World War II, he studied composition with the famous French composer Darius Milhaud at Mills College in Oakland, Calif. Mr. Milhaud encouraged Mr. Brubeck to pursue a career in jazz and in composition. Mr. Brubeck began an octet with other students and won critical attention for the group’s performances and original recordings. In 1949, Mr. Brubeck formed a trio and recorded pieces in San Francisco. The trio's recordings won Best Small Combo Awards from both critics and readers of Down Beat magazine. Two years later, Mr. Brubeck formed a quartet and brought a new sound to jazz, which came to be known as “West Coast jazz” or “cool jazz.” Mr. Brubeck has received many awards over his celebrated career including a Jazz Master's Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and induction into the International Jazz Hall of Fame. The current line-up for the Dave Brubeck Quartet includes Randy Jones on drums, Bobby Militello on saxophone, Michael Moore on bass, and Dave Brubeck on piano.
