South African Islamic Leader To
Recount The Fight Against Apartheid

SAN ANTONIO - An Islamic leader from South Africa will share his personal stories in the battle to vanquish his country's apartheid policies in a presentation at Trinity University.  Imam A. Rashied Omar, the leader of the Claremont Main Road Mosque in Cape Town, South Africa, will present "Islamic Resistance to Apartheid" at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 22 in the Chapman Center Gold Room.  The event is free and open to the public.

During his presentation, the Imam (a title given to Muslim scholars who are authorities on Islamic law) will draw on his experiences as an academic and an activist who led his community in an Islamic struggle against apartheid.  Imam Omar will also speak on his role in the social reconstruction of South Africa after the dismantling of apartheid.  To be a Muslim, he insisted, meant to fight for the rights of all South Africans.

Currently, the Imam is a visiting fellow at Notre Dame's Peace Studies Program, where he is working on issues of interfaith dialogue, post-apartheid racism, and reconciliation.

Imam Omar's visit to Trinity is sponsored by the religion department.  For more information, call (210) 999-8426.
