| Where Have We Been? Noted Historian Jacques Barzun to Hold Conversation on Changing Nature of Our Civilization |
| March 20, 2000 - What can be said about a civilization that has gone from the invention of the printing press, first used to print the Bible, to one that has seen the recent creation of the world wide web, used by many to access pornography? Jacques Barzun, a respected author and cultural historian, will share his thoughts in a presentation titled "From Dawn to Decadence: A Conversation About Our Current Condition." The event will take place on Monday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapman Center Auditorium and is free and open to the public.
The conversation will begin with a brief dialogue between Barzun and Trinity English professor David Middleton on the evolution of cultural attitudes and on historic events of Western history since the Renaissance. Audience members will then be invited to join the conversation and share their ideas on music, fine arts, economics and history. Barzun has been recognized as one of our last living men of letters. He was named professor emeritus of Columbia University in 1975 after a distinguished academic career that began at Columbia in 1927. Barzun is the author and editor of more than 40 books. His latest, From Dawn to Decadence: 500 Years of Cultural Triumph and Defeat, 1500 to the Present, will be published this spring. The event is sponsored by Trinity's English department.
