| Trinity University Receives Prestigious Award for Undergraduate Study |
| February 18, 2000 - Trinity University was one of 18 institutions nationwide, and the only one from Texas, selected to receive Beckman Scholars Program Awards for 2000-2001. The award program is a prestigious competition in which select institutions are invited to apply. It is funded by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation and will provide Trinity with three student awards totaling $52,800 for undergraduate research.
The Beckman Foundation reviewed program information for 798 institutions across the country, identifying 131 which demonstrated important commitments to quality undergraduate research programs in chemistry, biochemistry, and the biological sciences. Those institutions were then invited to apply for the award program. "The 18 Beckman Scholars Program Institutional Award recipients have convincingly demonstrated excellence, distinction, and distinctiveness in their undergraduate research capabilities and commitments, as well as in their plans and activities for their Beckman scholars," said Donald Shield, chairman of the Beckman Scholars Program. Additional recipients include California State University (Long Beach and Los Angeles), Carnegie Mellon University, Duke University, New York University, University of Arizona, Wellesley College, and Williams College. "Trinity stood out because of its long-standing commitment to and emphasis on quality undergraduate research," said Don Bailey, dean of the University's division of Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering. "With the Beckman award, we're in outstanding company. And our track record of students who have co-authored papers published in peer reviewed journals and who have been accepted to the nation's top graduate schools speaks to the quality of our program." Trinity University, founded in 1869, is a highly-selective, professionally-oriented liberal arts and sciences institution. This residential, primarily undergraduate university is noted for its superb facilities and undergraduate research opportunities. Through its academic and co-curricular programs, Trinity seeks to develop leaders with high moral and ethical standards. It is a learning community that has charted its course with a steadfast commitment to excellence for more than 130 years. |
