Former Leader of Pakistan to Speak at Trinity University |
|
Ms. Bhutto will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Laurie Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public. Her speech is titled, “The Role of the U.S. as the Only Remaining Superpower and Choices To Be Made in the Muslim World.” First elected prime minister at age 35, Ms. Bhutto became the youngest chief executive officer in the world and the first female prime minister of a Muslim country. After just 20 months in office, her government was dismissed by a rival political party. Undeterred, she was re-elected as prime minister in 1993 and served until the mid 1990's. The country’s current leader Gen. Pervez Musharraf has barred her from returning to Pakistan in October to take part in parliamentary elections. Ms. Bhutto’s stated goal for Pakistan is the restoration of democracy. She is considered an icon of the battle for democracy and is one of only a handful of female executive leaders who have shaped global events of the last century. She is expected to share her views on the need for basic democratic freedoms for the people of Pakistan, including freedom of the press, economic stability, and gender equality. Doors to Laurie Auditorium will open to the public at 6:45 p.m. Audience members are asked to enter through Doors 2-6. Trinity faculty, staff, and students may enter through Door 4 as early as 6:30 p.m. with a valid University identification card. The Distinguished Lecture Series is made possible by an endowment gift from Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. Brown of San Antonio. For more information, call the office of public relations at (210) 999-8406. |
