Trinity Students Win Regional Contest

November 18, 1999  - Dimitri Brown and Tom Blankston, sophomores from Houston, were part of a three man team of Trinity University computer science majors who took first place in the undergraduate division, and fourth place overall, in the 1999 Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) South Central USA Programming Contest held in Claremore, Oklahoma.  Trinity's team was one of 68 participating from colleges and universities throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico.

In the competition, each team was given six problems to solve on a single computer within a certain amount of time.  Trinity's fourth place finish put it ahead of 38 others from institutions with Ph.D. programs.  The University of Texas at Austin, the University of Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State University took the top three spots.

Tom Hicks, associate professor of computer science, helped coordinate the team.  "Brown and Blankston, along with their teammate, endured more than 20 hours of driving to compete in the contest.  Their determination and talent are obvious.  The fact that three sophomores can place first in the undergraduate division is impressive.  The fact that three sophomores can place higher than thirty-eight graduate colleges and universities, whose teams are comprised of Ph.D. and master's students, speaks highly of them and the computer science program at Trinity University."

Brown is the son of Drs. Houston and Elene Brown, and Bankston is the son of Ronald and Susan Bankston.

ACM consists of over 80,000 computer professionals, including 17,000 students, representing more than 100 countries and all areas of industry, academia, and government.

Trinity University, founded in 1869, is a highly-selective, professionally-oriented liberal arts and sciences institution.  This residential, primarily undergraduate university is noted for its superb facilities and undergraduate research opportunities.  Through its academic and co-curricular programs, Trinity seeks to develop leaders with high moral and ethical standards.  It is a learning community that has charted its course with a steadfast commitment to excellence for more than 130 years.
