Biography by Trinity History Professor Wins Multiple Awards

Nov. 25, 2002  – Char Miller, professor of history at Trinity University, has won two awards for his recently published biography on Gifford Pinchot, an early conservationist and one-time Chief of the United States Forest Service.

Gifford Pinchot and the Making of Modern Environmentalism was named best book in the history/biography category by the 2002 National Outdoor Book Awards. The awards are sponsored by Idaho State University and the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education.

The award was announced during  the International Conference on Outdoor Recreation and Education held in Charleston, S.C.

Additionally, Professor Miller’s book was also named Best Biography in the 2002 Connecticut Book Awards.  The awards will be presented in December at the Hartford, Conn. public library.  The Connecticut Book Awards are sponsored by the Connecticut Center for the Book, an affiliate of  the Center of the Book in the Library of Congress.

Professor Miller is chair of Trinity’s history department and has been a member of the faculty since 1981.  He specializes in American environmental, social, and cultural history.  He was named a Piper Professor for teaching excellence in 2002, a state-wide prize awarded by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation. 

He received his B.A. from Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif., and his master’s and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.
