May 14, 2002 Char Miller, professor and chair of Trinity University’s history department, has been selected as a Piper Professor for 2002.  The award is given annually by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation to recognize college professors in the state of Texas for excellence in teaching, advising, and service to higher education.

Nominations for the Piper Professorship are taken from colleges and universities across the state.  From the nominations received, the Piper Foundation picks 10 faculty members to honor. A $5,000 honorarium is included with the prize.

“Students regularly praise the personal interest Dr. Miller takes in them, whether they are signing up for courses, struggling with an assignment, thinking about future careers, or simply staying in touch with him long after they have graduated,” wrote Michael Fischer, vice president for Academic Affairs, in a letter nominating Dr. Miller.  “A prolific scholar, Dr. Miller is the author and editor of numerous books, articles, chapters, essays, and reviews on subjects ranging from urban planning to environmental policy, from African-American studies to Texas political history, and from the influence of religion on American society to the role of the automobile in American popular culture.”

In addition to the Piper Professorship honor, Dr. Miller has also received two awards for his latest book, a biography titled Gifford Pinchot and the Making of Modern Environmentalism.

The book won the Best Biography prize from the Independent Book Publishers association and was the Gold Award winner for Biography in the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year competition.

Dr. Miller has been a member of the Trinity faculty since 1981.  He received his Ph.D. and master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University.  He was awarded his bachelor’s degree with honors in history and political studies from Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif.
