TRINITY UNIVERSITY COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS SHINE AT REGIONAL CONTEST

December 4, 2001 — Two teams of Trinity University computer science students have finished in third and sixth place in a regional programming contest involving 68 squads from 33 colleges and universities from throughout the Southwest.

Each three-person team had five hours to solve eight programming problems by determining patterns and using logic. The third-place team solved four problems, while the team that ranked sixth finished three problems. This was the second year in a row that a Trinity team finished at No. 3 in the Association for Computing Machinery’s regional competition held in early November at Louisiana State University.

“Placing both of our teams in the top 10 is quite an accomplishment,” said Maurice Eggen, associate professor of computer science at Trinity. “Having placed a team third from among almost 70 teams two years in a row is noteworthy.”

Team members who placed third were seniors Tom Bankston and Dimitri Brown of Houston, and sophomore Chris Smith of Eagle, Idaho.

Finishing in sixth place were three juniors — Alexander Kollipoulos of Ponca City, Okla., Patrick Lioi of Round Rock, Texas, and Nickolaus Wing of San Marcos, Texas.
