|
October 5, 2001 – John Cornyn, attorney general of Texas and newly declared candidate for the U.S. Senate, and John N. Igo, poet, playwright, community volunteer, and English professor emeritus of San Antonio College, have been named the 2001 Trinity University Distinguished Alumni. Mr. Cornyn and Mr. Igo will be recognized at a gala dinner in their honor Friday, Oct. 19, during Trinity’s Alumni Weekend 2001. The Distinguished Alumnus dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapman Center. Alumni Weekend festivities are scheduled from Oct. 19 through Oct. 21.
On Sept. 21, Mr. Cornyn announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Sen. Phil Gramm. Before becoming attorney general, Mr. Cornyn served on the Texas Supreme Court from 1991 to 1998 and was a district judge in Bexar County from 1984 to 1990. An active Trinity alumnus, Mr. Cornyn serves on the University’s Board of Visitors. He also graduated from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1977 and earned a Master’s of Law from the University of Virginia Law School in 1995. Mr. Cornyn was recognized earlier this year by the League of United Latin American Citizens for his efforts to promote civil rights in the Hispanic community. He received the St. Mary’s Distinguished Law School Graduate Award in 1994 and the Outstanding Texas Leader Award from the 2000 John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Forum.
Bozetti of John Igo was released last month and is the latest of 12 books of poetry Mr. Igo has had published. Other recent books include Poetry and Poetics and Mitotes of John Igo. In addition, he has written two textbooks, including one on how to teach poetry to deaf adults. An icon in San Antonio community theater circles, Mr. Igo is involved with the Extended Run Players, a company of older thespians that specializes in readers’ theater. He has written 25 plays, nine of which have been produced for the stage. For 18 years he served as a critic for the North San Antonio Times, reviewing thousands of area theatrical productions. He has also served as the volunteer project manager of Theater Archive at the San Antonio Public Library. “John Igo is a major intellectual and artistic personality in the cultural life of San Antonio,” said John Silber ’47, chancellor of Boston University, in his nomination letter. Last year the San Antonio Theater Coalition honored him with a special tribute as “a living legend,” and he received the Spotlight Award from the American Association of Community Theaters for service to community theater the same year. San Antonio College established a drama scholarship in his honor and named the English faculty conference room after him. Tickets for the Distinguished Alumnus dinner are $30 per person.
