| Trinity University Recognizes Trustee Arthur Stieren with Distinguished Service Award |
| May 15, 2000 - Trinity University presented its most prestigious award, the Distinguished Service Award, to Arthur T. Stieren during its spring commencement ceremony on May 13, 2000. Stieren, a member of Trinity's Board of Trustees since 1979, received the award in recognition of his extraordinary service to the University and the San Antonio community.
Stieren established Trinity's Stieren Arts Enrichment Series in 1980, bringing to campus literally hundreds of some of the most prominent artists, musicians, writers, and thinkers in the country. "Arthur Stieren has demonstrated unique devotion to promoting the arts both in San Antonio and here on the Trinity campus," said Dr. John Brazil, president of Trinity University, in presenting the award. Stieren, along with his wife Jane, have generously supported many of Trinity's arts programs. Their generosity made possible the renovation of a University theater named in their honor. Most recently, they established the Stieren Endowment for the Arts to support and strengthen a broad section of arts programs offered on campus. "Stieren's commitment and generous philanthropy ensure that the arts are, and will remain, vibrantly alive at Trinity University," said Dr. Brazil. A native of San Antonio, Stieren attended Alamo Heights High School and graduated cum laude from the Culver Military Academy. He received a bachelor's degree in science from Yale University and his M.B.A. from Harvard. He is an independent oil producer and rancher. The Distinguished Service Award was established by the University's Board of Trustees in 1973 to recognize significant contributions to the excellence of Trinity University and to the community of San Antonio. This award has been bestowed only nine times in Trinity University's history. Recipients are individuals who have both outstanding records of civic leadership and who have made major contributions to the growth and development of the University. Trinity University, founded in 1869, is a highly selective, professionally-oriented liberal arts and sciences institution. This residential, primarily undergraduate coeducational university is noted for its superb facilities and undergraduate research opportunities. Through its academic and co-curricular programs, Trinity seeks to develop leaders with high moral and ethical standards. It is a learning community that has charted its course with a steadfast commitment to excellence for more than 130 years. |
