Between Divinity and DNA: Distinguished Philosopher to Explore How Culture Relates to Genes and God

Photo of Holmes Rolston IIIMarch 14, 2003 – Fifty years ago, a team of biologists astounded the world by discovering the essential structure of DNA and unlocking the mystery of our genetic code. Since then, scientists have been able to unravel the working of our genes and discover biological keys to our nature.  This has led to a remarkable argument concerning our culture.  Just how much of the human experience can be explained by genes and how much has been inspired from other, perhaps more divine, sources?  Holmes Rolston III, distinguished professor of philosophy at Colorado State University,  will explore the argument in a presentation titled “Genes, Genesis, and God.”  The event will take place at  7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, in the Chapman Auditorium.  It is free and open to the public.

Professor Rolston is considered to be the father of environmental ethics. His six books  have received critical notice in both academic journals and the national press.  They include Science and Religion: A Critical Survey,  Philosophy Gone Wild, and Genes, Genesis and God.

In March of this year, Dr. Rolston was named the 2003 Templeton Prize laureate by the Templeton Prize for Progress Toward Research or Discoveries about Spiritual Realities. The prize, valued at more than $1 million, will be awarded to Dr. Rolston in May by the Duke of Edinburgh in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. The Templeton Prize, founded in 1972 by Sir John Templeton, is the world's best known religion prize.

The event is sponsored by Trinity’s department of religion, the Templeton Foundation, and American Scientific Affiliation. For more information, call the religion department at (210) 999-8426.
