| Princeton Theological Seminary Names Fellowship in Honor of Trinity Religion Professor |
| November 16, 1999 - The president and board of trustees of Princeton Theological Seminary have established the Garcia-Treto Faculty Fellowship in the name of Trinity University religion professor and Princeton Seminary trustee Francisco Garcia-Treto. The annual fellowship is part of the Seminary's Hispanic Summer Program, which empowers Hispanic Americans for ministry in their own communities. The fellowship will be awarded to a different scholar each year to teach biblical studies.
"The (fellowship) is one more indication of Princeton Theological Seminary's ongoing and increasing commitment to the Hispanic church and community," says Justo Gonzalez, executive director of the Hispanic Theological Initiative at Princeton Theological Seminary. "It is very fitting that it is in honor of Garcia-Treto, who has not only been a leading scholar in the Hispanic community, but who has long served in the Princeton community." Garcia-Treto has been a Princeton Theological Seminary trustee for 25 years. Garcia-Treto will also be the first recipient of the new fellowship. He will teach a course in Spanish next summer titled "The Book of Genesis: A Reading from a Hispanic Perspective." Garcia-Treto has been a member of the Trinity faculty since 1966. He is also an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. and a member of Mission Presbytery. Trinity University, founded in 1869, is a highly-selective, professionally-oriented liberal arts and sciences institution. This residential, primarily undergraduate university is noted for its superb facilities and undergraduate research opportunities. Through its academic and co-curricular programs, Trinity seeks to develop leaders with high moral and ethical standards. It is a learning community that has charted its course with a steadfast commitment to excellence for more than 130 years. |
