GROWING PAINS FOR THE CITY: HISTORY PROFESSOR TO SPEAK ON HOW SAN ANTONIO DEVELOPED

April 9,2002 – Spread over 500 square miles of land, San Antonio is a place where you need a car to get around in the city. But that was not always the case. Char Miller, professor and chair of Trinity’s history department, will speak on how San Antonio changed from being a frontier village to a major metropolitan area in a Food For Thought luncheon.  Professor Miller’s presentation, titled “The Best Laid Plans: How San Antonio Grew, and Why,” will take place at noon on Wednesday, May 1, in the Coates Center Fiesta Room.  Tickets for the luncheon are $14 and reservations should be made three days prior to the event by calling the alumni relations office at (210) 999-8404.

For his presentation, Professor Miller will focus on the transformation of the physical space where San Antonians have lived over time.  He will also explain how the changes the city has undergone affected its citizens.

Professor Miller is the editor of On the Border: an Environmental History of San Antonio.  The book, recently published by the University of Pittsburgh Press, will be available for purchase after the luncheon.

The Food For Thought luncheon lecture series is sponsored by the San Antonio chapter of the Trinity University Alumni Association.
