Biology Professor to Explain Why Biodiversity Matters

Aug. 23, 2002 – David Ribble, associate professor and chair of the biology department, will speak on the importance of biodiversity in the first Food For Thought luncheon lecture for the new school year.  Professor Ribble will present "Biodiversity: What it is and Why You Should Care” at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 4, in the Coates Center Fiesta Room.  Tickets for the luncheon are $14 and reservations should be made three days prior to the event by calling the alumni relations office at (210) 999-8404.

Biodiversity is the term scientists use to describe the array of earth’s biological variety, including genes, populations, communities, and ecosystems,” says Professor Ribble. During his presentation, he will explore the meaning of biodiversity by describing the impressive biological diversity of Texas and the reasons for this biodiversity within the state.  “Unfortunately, some of this biodiversity is threatened with extinction, and I will discuss why we should be concerned about this loss of biodiversity from a human welfare perspective.”

The Food For Thought luncheon lecture series is sponsored by the San Antonio chapter of the Trinity University Alumni Association.
