ASTRONOMY PROFESSOR TO LECTURE ON DISCOVERING NEW PLANETS

Astronomy Professor Geoffrey MarcyOct. 8, 2001 - Geoffrey Marcy, professor of astronomy at the University of California at Berkley, will share his research on the discovery of planetary systems as part of the Distinguished Scientist Lecture Series at Trinity University. His presentation will be at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, in Laurie Auditorium.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Dr. Marcy was the first scientist to discover a planetary system around a sun-like star. Another of his discoveries was the first Zeeman measurement of a magnetic field for solar stars. In addition, Dr. Marcy holds the first certificate of recognition awarded by the Extra Solar Planetary Foundation and the first bioastronomy Medal of Honor issued by the International Astronomical Union's Commission 51.

He believes his and other discoveries by astrophysicists may provide early clues about the formation and properties of planets and shed light on the unique qualities of our solar system.

A summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UCLA, Dr. Marcy received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He has been a Fellow of the Carnegie Institution of Washington and a distinguished professor at San Francisco State University.

The Distinguished Scientists Lecture Series is made possible by an endowment gift from Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. Brown of San Antonio. Mr. Brown is a Trinity University Trustee.
