Two Trinity University Juniors Win Goldwater Scholarships

April 7, 2003 – Two juniors at Trinity University – Amanda Hargrove of Cypress, Texas, and Barbara McClain of La Vernia, Texas – have received a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for the 2003-04 academic year.

Each student plans to pursue a doctorate in a field of science and to continue academic research or possibly work as a research scientist for the United States government. As part of the scholarship award, both Miss Hargrove and Miss McClain will receive a maximum of $7,500 to help cover costs for tuition, fees, books, and room and board. They join an elite group of 14 Trinity students who have received Goldwater Scholarships in the past nine years, according to Jeffrey Lawson, associate professor of mathematics, coordinator of the scholarship application process for the University.

Miss Hargrove is a double major in chemistry and Spanish. She is a graduate of Cypress Fairbanks High School in suburban Houston and is the daughter of Ken and Francine Hargrove and Judy and Joe Leggio. “I plan to enter a chemistry graduate program and earn a Ph.D. in organic chemistry,” Miss Hargrove says, citing Trinity’s challenging academic environment, supportive administration, and dedicated faculty for helping to prepare her to compete successfully for the Goldwater Scholarship.  She singled out the chemistry department faculty and Professor Lawson for their encouragement and rigorous courses. At Trinity, Miss Hargrove’s

research interest involves mechanisms for delivery of cancer drugs to malignant cells in such a way that the drugs are inert while being transported to the cells but are activated by  photochemical mechanisms. She has presented some of her findings at the 58th southwest regional meeting of the American Chemical Society and at a Trinity University chemistry department symposium.

Miss McClain is majoring in both mathematics and physics. The daughter of Alice McClain, she is a graduate of La Vernia High School. She also plans to attend graduate school to seek a Ph.D. in nuclear physics in preparation for a career in academics or as a government research scientist. As a student at Trinity, Miss McClain says she has learned from “the greatest of scholars. It is because of their unceasing guidance and instruction that this scholarship is a real possibility for students in the sciences.” While an undergraduate, Miss McClain has participated in summer research programs at Penn State, the College of William and Mary, and Rice University.

The Goldwater Foundation, a federally endowed agency, was established in 1986, in honor of former Arizona Sen. Barry M. Goldwater. The scholarships are designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

Since its inception, the Goldwater Foundation has awarded more than 3,900 scholarships worth more than $39 million. This year, trustees awarded 300 scholarships to undergraduate sophomores and juniors in 50 states and Puerto Rico. The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,093 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.
