TRINITY UNIVERSITY TO AWARD MORE THAN 500 DEGREES

April 29, 2002 – Trinity University will hold two commencement exercises on Saturday, May 11, conferring degrees upon 82 graduate students and 465 undergraduates.

Robert S. “Bob” McClane, founder of McClane Partners LLC and chairman of the Trinity University Board of Trustees, will deliver the commencement address to undergraduates. Paul Kelleher, the Murchison Distinguished Professor of Education and chair of the department, will address graduate students.

Commencement for students receiving master’s degrees in teaching, accounting, and health care administration will be at 9 a.m. in the Margarite B. Parker Chapel. No tickets are necessary for admission. The ceremony for undergraduates will be at 10:30 a.m. in Laurie Auditorium, where seating is limited and tickets are required for guests and relatives of candidates for Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Music degrees

In addition to Mr. McClane, a graduating senior will speak at Trinity’s undergraduate ceremony. Elizabeth “Lizzie” Yasser of Tulsa, Okla., who is majoring in English with minors in Spanish and women’s studies, will address the assembly. At Trinity, she has written articles for the Trinitonian student newspaper and the Trinity Review literary magazine. Ms. Yasser is a member of the Trinity women’s tennis team and helped lead the squad to its first NCAA Women’s Tennis national championship.

Also during the undergraduate ceremony, the Dr. & Mrs. Z.T. Scott Faculty Fellowship Award will be announced in recognition of a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and advising students. On Friday, May 10, at 4:00 p.m., junior and senior students will be initiated into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society in the Great Hall of Chapman Center.

Before founding his consulting and investment services company, Mr. McClane held various executive positions with Cullen/Frost Bankers Inc., including 12 years as president.

He was a founder of Leadership San Antonio, a continuing program of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce dedicated to bringing together proven leaders from across diverse ethnic, cultural, and interest backgrounds to broaden total community understanding.  He served as chairman of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce in 1996 and chaired the Economic Development Foundation in 1987-89.  Most recently, he served as chairman of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and as chairman of the Free Trade Alliance-San Antonio, a coalition of city government, the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, and the Economic Development Foundation.

A native of Kenedy, Texas, Mr. McClane earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Trinity in 1961 and received the University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1987.

Professor Kelleher is completing his first year as chair of Trinity’s education department. As a former superintendent or principal at public schools in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, his research interests relate to educational policy and the enhancement of teaching and learning. He is a strong advocate for teacher retention and says the key to improving schools is to strengthen the teachers who interact daily with students.

He holds an educational doctorate from Columbia University Teachers’ College, along with master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Harvard University.
