TRINITY UNIVERSITY ADDS GRANTS OFFICER TO ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF

Sept. 21, 2001 – An English professor has joined the staff of Trinity University to seek out external sources to fund faculty research and student scholarships.

As Trinity’s new Sponsored Research Officer, Jed Deppman will be part of the Academic Affairs staff. He holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and also will teach three English composition courses at Trinity during the Fall 2001 semester.

“This is a good time for Trinity to have a sponsored research officer,” Dr. Deppman says, noting that many faculty members are actively looking for grants to fund their research projects. “As a faculty member, you cannot know all of the foundations that are out there.”

In addition, he plans to help other faculty members identify graduate school scholarships and fellowships for eligible high-achieving undergraduates.

Fred Loxsom, associate vice president for academic affairs, said Dr. Deppman’s work will “allow our excellent faculty members to gain the national recognition they deserve. We want to build on our success.”

In recent years, individual Trinity professors have secured grants from the National Science Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Spencer Foundation, among others.

As part of his work as a research officer, Dr. Deppman will reach out to the San Antonio community seeking multi-disciplinary grants for both science and humanities programs and for grants to help professors further develop course offerings.

Before coming to Trinity, Dr. Deppman was an assistant professor at Oberlin College and at Eastern Kentucky University.
