Jazzy New York Voices to Open 1999-2000
Stieren Arts Series at Trinity University

August 16, 1999  - The New York Voices, a quartet which has received critical and popular acclaim for its tight and intricate vocal jazz performances, will be the first guests of Trinity University's 1999-2000 Stieren Arts Enrichment Series.  The quartet will present a concert on Saturday, September 11, at 8 p.m. in Laurie Auditorium.  The event is free and open to the public.

The New York Voices have gathered strong support from fans and critics alike for their concerts and recordings.  The ensemble recently recorded an album filled with songs written by singer Paul Simon.  A review in Billboard magazine called the work "so inspired it makes one wonder why no one has thought of doing jazz vocal renditions of Simon's most memorable tunes before."  In 1997, the ensemble won a Grammy award for an album they recorded with the Count Basie Orchestra.

The Stieren Arts Enrichment Series brings to Trinity a distinguished array of outstanding leaders in the fields of art, music, drama, literature, communication, art history, and aesthetics.  Stieren events to be presented during the year include a reading by author Joyce Carol Oates, presentations by film and television critics, and a production of the musical Cabaret.

The dates for other events in the Stieren Arts Enrichment Series are:

Broers, University of Aberdeen, Scotland; Darcy Grimaldo Grisby, University of California, Berkeley; Julia Sagraves, Northwestern University; and Janis Tomlinson, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Alexandria, Virginia.
