TRINITY UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S STUDIES PROGRAM TO HOLD FORUM ON SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE

Sept. 14, 2001 The women's studies program at Trinity University will sponsor a public forum on issues concerning social and economic justice. The forum will take place on Monday, Sept. 24, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Chapman Center Auditorium.  A reception will immediately follow in the Chapman Gold Room.

A panel of international and local political activists will take part in a dialogue on issues such as labor rights, environmental protection, economic development in the global South, and the role of international financial institutions, such as the World Bank and IMF, in the global economy.  The panelists will discuss these issues at both the international level as well as the local/community level, with respect to labor struggles in San Antonio and in the maquiladora complexes at the U.S./Mexican border.  The event is free and open to all.

The distinguished panel of speakers will include:

  • Tania Arosemena (Panama), who works with Panama's Civil Society Initiative for the Environment (ISCA) network and the Law & Ecology Association.
  • Jonah K. Gokova (Zimbabwe), who works with the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development, the Southern African People's Solidarity Network, the African Ecumenical Process on Alternatives to Globalization, and the Poverty Reduction Forum
  • Carmencita “Chie” Abad (Philippines), who is a former garment worker for Gap subcontractor Sako Corporation on Saipan, in the U.S. Commonwealth of the Marianas, and currently works with Global Exchange (San Francisco, Calf.)
  • Carlos Lopez (San Antonio), who is from the Coalition for Justice in the Maquiladoras.

The forum is sponsored by the women’s studies program; the departments of economics, philosophy, communications, sociology and anthropology, business administration, religion,  modern languages and literatures, and biology; and the University chaplain.
