KRTU-FM 91.7 Celebrates a Jazz Icon with “A Month Of Mingus” |
| April 10, 2003 – KRTU-FM 91.7, the radio station of Trinity University, celebrates the work of jazz icon Charles Mingus with “a Month of Mingus,” during April. Every day from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., KRTU-FM will play only music by Mingus. And on April 22, the birthday of the jazz giant, KRTU-FM will devote its entire jazz programming, from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. to the work of Mingus. KRTU-FM’s celebration of Mingus is made possible by generous gift by jazz fans Omar Rodriguez, Jacob Rodriguez, and Veronica Prida. Mingus, who achieved fame as a jazz composer, bassist, bandleader, and pianist, was born in 1922. Early in his career, he played with jazz greats Louis Armstrong and Lionel Hampton. From the ’50s until his death in 1979, he was noted for taking jazz in new directions and transcending the musical genre. He is remembered for his improvisational work with leading jazz musicians for being part of the jazz avant-garde movement, for writing several movie scores, and for writing large instrumental works. He also founded the Jazz Workshop, a group that gave up-and-coming jazz composers a forum in which to perform their music in concert and to record their work. For more information, call KRTU-FM at (210) 999-8313. KRTU-FM is a non-commercial, listener-supported radio station.
