Chicano Studies Professor to Recount Roots of Latina Voices in Word and Song |

Feb. 25, 2003 An acclaimed professor of Chicano literature will explore the contributions that Latinas have made to music and literature throughout the 19th century in a presentation at Trinity University. Maria Herrera-Sobek, holder of the Luis Leal Endowed Chair in Chicano Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will present “Latina Voices: Rediscovering Feminist Perspectives in Word and Song” at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 3, in the Coates Center Waxahachie Room. The event is free and open to the public. For her presentation, Dr. Herrera-Sobek will speak on the women’s narrative that underlies the music and writing of Latinas in the 19th century. She will also speak on Latina images and ideas that have found their way into popular songs and corridos. As well as holding the Leal Chair, Dr. Herrera-Sobek is also chairman of the Chicano studies department. She is also the Acting Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Policy at the university. She has published a number of books, including The Bracero Experience: Elitelore versus Folklore, The Mexican Corrido: A Feminist Analysis, and Northward Bound: The Mexican Immigrant Experience in Ballad and Song.
