Trinity Students’ Documentary Included in 10th Annual Festival Cine Latino Film Fest

Sept. 10, 2002 – A documentary by four Trinity students has been selected to be part of the 10th Annual Festival Cine Latino, a film festival organized by Cine Accion, a Latino media organization based in San Francisco, Calif.

Festival Cine Latino will run from Sept. 17 – 29 in San Francisco, Calf., and will feature 12 full-length dramatic features, as well as 40 documentaries and short films, that deal with aspects of the Latino experience. More than 250 entries were submitted for consideration for this year’s festival.

Brian Birdwell, a junior from Crockett, Texas, and Keenan Sloan, a senior from Memphis, Tenn., worked on the documentary with recent spring graduates Andi   McDaniel from Schaumburg, Ill., and Jennifer Smith from Austin, Texas.  Mr. Birdwell and Mr. Sloan are communication majors. Ms. McDaniel received a degree in English and Ms. Smith received a degree in communication.

Their documentary, titled “When I Dream Dreams,” explores the impact of “English-only” education policies in Texas on teachers and students before the law was overturned by civil rights legislation in the 1960s. The documentary relies on interviews with adults who grew up in Spanish-speaking households and attended schools that punished—sometimes physically—students for speaking any language other than English.

The documentary was completed in conjunction with a course titled Alternative Media. Mr. Birdwell is the director of the documentary and Ms. McDaniel served as the producer.
