MEMBER OF THE JESUS SEMINAR TO SPEAK ON LOOKING AT THE BIBLE IN A NEW LIGHT

March 6, 2002  – Marcus Borg, author, distinguished professor of religion, and member of the Jesus Seminar, will present “Seeing the Bible Again: History, Metaphor, and Sacrament.”  The presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Margarite B. Parker Chapel on Friday, March 22.  The event is free and open to the pubic.

During his presentation, Dr. Borg, distinguished professor of religion and culture at Oregon State University, will speak on reading the Bible as a combination of memory and metaphor.  He will elaborate on seeing the Bible as sacred scripture for its status and function in Christianity rather than as a literal recounting of the word of God.

Dr. Borg is the author of several books, including Meeting Jesus for the First Time: The Historical Jesus and the Heart of Contemporary Faith, The God We Never Knew: Beyond Dogmatic Religion to a More Authentic Faith, and Reading the Bible for the First Time: Taking the Bible Seriously but Not Literally.

The mission of Jesus Seminar is to research the historical evidence surrounding the life of Jesus. The Seminar meets twice a year to discuss research and to reach a scholarly consensus on the authenticity of the sayings and events attributed to Jesus.  The Seminar has gained notoriety through the years for seriously questioning the validity of parts of the New Testament Gospels.

The event is sponsored by Madison Square Presbyterian Church, University Presbyterian Church, Christ Lutheran Church, Trinity’s department of religion, and the Margarite B. Parker Chapel.  For more information, call (210) 999-8426.
