FILMMAKER MICHAEL MOORE
TO SPEAK AT TRINITY UNIVERSITY

Filmmaker Michael MooreSept. 7, 2001 -- Filmmaker Michael Moore, whose biting documentary Roger and Me was both a critical hit and a commercial success at the box office, will be the first guest of Trinity University's Stieren Arts Enrichment Series.  His presentation, "An Evening with Michael Moore," will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 24, in Trinity's Laurie Auditorium.  The event is free and open to the public.

Released in 1989, Roger and Me dealt with the closing of a General Motors plant in Flint, Mich., the birthplace for both GM and Mr. Moore. Ostensibly the film was about Mr. Moore's attempts to contact Roger Smith, then the head of GM and the "Roger" of the title, to talk about the closing. However, the real thrust of the film came from Mr. Moore's razor sharp wit that was highly critical of the corporate business practices which led to the plant closing.  The film was honored as the Best Documentary of 1989 by the New York Society of Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics.  Additionally, it was also named Best Film at the Toronto Film Festival.  Roger and Me also has the distinction of being the highest grossing documentary of all time.

After the success of Roger and Me, Mr. Moore produced and was the host of the television shows "TV Nation" and "The Awful Truth." "TV Nation" won an Emmy award for Outstanding Information Series in 1995"The Awful Truth" has been nominated for an Emmy in 2001.

Mr. Moore is the author of Downsize This, a book which chronicles corporate greed in America, and Adventures in a TV Nation,  a behind the scenes look at the turmoil associated with producing and broadcasting his first television show.  He also wrote and directed a documentary titled The Big One, an account of his promotional tour for Downsize This.

The Stieren Arts Enrichment Series brings an array of leaders in the areas of art, music, drama, literature, communication, art history, and aesthetics to Trinity.  The series is made possible through an endowment created by Jane and the late Arthur Stieren of San Antonio.
