Trinity Distinguished Professor Honored by MALDEF

Oct. 1, 2002 –  Arturo Madrid, the Murchison Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Trinity University, has been honored by the San Antonio chapter of the Mexican-American Legal Defense Fund (MALDEF) with the Matt Garcia Public Service Award.

The award was given to Professor Madrid during the 18th Annual San Antonio Awards dinner on Sept. 13.

The award is named in honor of the late Matt Garcia, a former state legislator from San Antonio. Mr. Garcia is remembered for his tireless efforts in promoting education and human rights.  He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1973 and served until his death 10 years later. One of his first acts as a legislator was to carry the first bilingual education bill through the House Appropriations committee.  One of his last pieces of business in the legislature was to play a key role in securing the passage of the State Commission for Human Rights Act.

Professor Madrid became a distinguished professor at Trinity University in 1993 after nine years as president of the Tomás Rivera Center.  In 1996, he was awarded the Charles Frankel Prize from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The award was presented by President Bill Clinton at a White House ceremony.

Before serving as the founding president for the Tomás Rivera Center, Professor Madrid was also the founding president of the National Chicano Council for Higher Education.

He has served on the boards of several prominent organizations, including the College Board, the Association for the Advancement of Higher Education, and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.  He currently serves on the boards of the A.H. Belo Corp., the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, and the Intercultural Development Research Association.

Professor Madrid received his bachelor’s degree, with honors, from the University of New Mexico.  He received his master’s degree in Spanish literature and his Ph.D. in Hispanic languages and literatures from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Trinity University is a nationally recognized liberal arts and sciences institution noted for its exceptional faculty and commitment to the comprehensive preparation of its talented student body. It is a learning community that has charted its course with a steadfast commitment to excellence since it was founded in 1869.
