Professor to Offer a Prescription for
Better Doctor-Patient Communication
During Food for Thought Luncheon

March 15, 2000  - John McGrath, associate professor of speech at Trinity, sees a small disorder in our health care system.  According to McGrath, doctors and patients are not communicating well and that is having an affect on patients' health.  McGrath will explore this issue in a presentation titled "Doctor-Patient Communication: Getting the Most Out of Health Care."  The event, part of Trinity University's Food For Thought luncheon series, will take place Wednesday, April 5, at noon in the Coates Center Fiesta room.  Tickets are $11 and reservations can be made by contacting the Trinity Alumni Relations Office at (210) 999-8404 at least three days before the luncheon to assure seating.

McGrath has researched the communication problems from both a patient and doctor's point of view.  He has found, for example, that some patients feel their doctors do not give them enough information or do not spend enough time with them.  Some doctors, on the other hand, feel that their patients really listen and ask strange questions.  One consequence of this lack of communication is that many patients do not take their medications as directed and jeopardize their health.

The Food For Thought luncheon lecture series is sponsored by the San Antonio chapter of the Trinity University Alumni Association.  For more information or to make reservations, call the Trinity University Alumni Relations Office at (210) 999-8404.
