| Memorial Scholarship Established at Trinity University |
| October 14, 1999 - A former high school English teacher has left $417,500 to Trinity University in honor of her mother and in memory of her long time friend who was an elementary school principal. The funds are dedicated to scholarships for students pursuing a master's degree in teaching.
Gloria Grace Sain received her B.A. ('42) and M.A. ('54) in English from Trinity. Katherine Thrailkill also received her B.S. ('56) and M.S. ('61) in psychology from the University. Sain taught honors English at Jefferson High School from 1954 to 1978. Thrailkill was principal of Smith Elementary School for 20 years. Friends since 1942, they both relished teaching and sharing their knowledge with students and fellow teachers. Sain vowed ongoing assistance to their kindred teachers through a memorial scholarship. "Gloria was immensely proud of her students, fondly recounting anecdotes of the best and brightest," said long-time friend and neighbor Ann Tarrillion, whose husband was executor of Sain's estate. "Leaving a large portion of her estate to Trinity University for this scholarship is her way of encouraging and enabling others to enter a career in education. This in turn, shares her love of teaching with future generations." "It's wonderful that two educators would remember their alma mater and their profession, enabling bright students to pursue their goals and dreams of becoming teachers," says John Moore, chair and Murchison Distinguished Professor of Education. Trinity University offers a five-year program leading to a master's of arts in teaching, which includes a full year teaching internship in professional development schools.
