Oct. 27, 2003 – What was life like for the original
inhabitants of Latin America? What do we know about the cultures of
the Mayans and the Olmecs? Trinity University will host a symposium
titled “Major Themes of Ancient Mesoamerica” that will
explore these questions. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov.
1, in the Coates Center Fiesta Room. Admission for the symposium is
$40 in advance and $45 at the door. Registration will take place from
9 – 9:30 a.m. in the Fiesta Room with the seminar beginning at 9:30
and running until 5 p.m.
Several presentations will be delivered during the seminar including:
- “In Search of the Maya Forest: A Hostile Jungle or Nature’s Sacred
Paradise?” by Scott Fedick, University of
California, Riverside.
- “American’s First Sport: Games and Gods on the Gulf Coast” by Rex
Koontz, University of Houston.
- “Power Dressing in Ancient Mesoamerica: The Roles of Cloth among
the Classic Maya” by Dorie Reents-Budet,
Smithsonian Institution.
The event is sponsored by the Alamo Pre-Columbian Society and Trinity’s
