| Former Israeli Prime Minister to Speak at Trinity University |
| January 26, 2000 - Benjamin Netanyahu, the youngest prime minister in Israeli history, will speak at Trinity University on Monday, February 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Laurie Auditorium. His address, titled "The Past Century into the New Millennium," is free and open to the public. It is part of the University's Distinguished Lecture Series.
Netanyahu became prime minister of Israel in 1996, narrowly defeating Shimon Peres. His victory restored the Likud party to power three years after he became its leader. He served until May 1999 when he was defeated by Ehud Barak. The fight against terrorism has been a central theme throughout Netanyahu's public career. As prime minister, he successfully reduced terrorism inside his country and, in 1998, made an indelible mark by signing the historic interim peace agreement in Wye River, Maryland, with Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat. He is also the author of several books on terrorism, including Fighting Terrorism: How Democracies Can Defeat Domestic and International Terrorism. Netanyahu has lived in both Israel and the United States. Born in Tel Aviv, he grew up in Jerusalem, but attended high school in Philadelphia. He returned to Israel in 1967 and served in the country's elite army unit until 1972. Netanyahu studied at M.I.T receiving his B.S. in architecture and M.S. in management studies. He has served as Israel's deputy foreign minister and as ambassador to the United Nations. The Distinguished Lecture Series is a community service program made possible by an endowment from Mr. & Mrs. Walter F. Brown of San Antonio. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis. |
