Charles B. White, vice president for information resources and administrative affairs, announced the appointment that will take effect Aug. 1. He said Ms. Graves was chosen after an extensive national search and brings a rich library background to the University. Most recently, Ms. Graves was dean of library and information services at Hollins College in Virginia, where she also had served as library director. Previously, she was associate dean of libraries and professor at the University of Mississippi and has held various leadership positions in libraries at the University of Illinois at Chicago, The Illinois Institute of Technology, and Loyola University in Chicago. Ms. Graves received her Master of Librarianship and Bachelor of Arts from Emory University. She has published numerous papers and several books and has edited various library journals. At Trinity, we want to continue to have a strong print collection while being able to deliver services and resources to our user community anytime, Dr. White said. The Coates Library has more than 871,000 volumes along with an instructional media services unit that includes a multi-media development center. Ms. Graves said she plans to re-establish the Coates Library as a central source for information among today's Internet-savvy students. To accomplish this, we can use technology to develop innovative ways to teach students about the wealth of sources available in all formats and to help them develop the critical thinking skills needed to discern what is, and is not, quality information or research, she said. Doing so will require a collaborative approach with the teaching faculty and close work with those involved in academic computing and instructional technology. In all, Ms. Graves said, this is an incredibly exciting time to be working in academic libraries and at Trinity in particular! Trinity University, founded in 1869, is a highly selective, professionally oriented liberal arts and sciences institution. This residential, primarily undergraduate coeducational university is noted for its superb facilities and undergraduate research opportunities. It is a learning community that has charted its course with a steadfast commitment to excellence for more than 130 years. |
