Writer Joyce Carol Oates to Speak at Trinity University

February 21, 2000  - As the author of more than fifty books, Joyce Carol Oates is considered one of America’s most multi-talented writers.  In a presentation at Trinity University, "An Encore Evening with Joyce Carol Oates," she will read selections of her work and add commentary.  The event, free and open to the public, will be held Monday, March 13, at 8 p.m. in the Jane and Arthur Stieren Theater.

Spanning several genres, Oates' writing involves a highly sophisticated fictional world that reflects the uncertain and upsetting experiences of life.  Her recent work includes My Heart Laid Bare, The Collector of Hearts, New Plays, and Tenderness.  Her forthcoming novel, Blonde, a fictional account of the life of Marilyn Monroe, will be published in April.  Oates has earned several honors for her writing, including the PEN / Malamud Award for Excellence in short fiction, the Rosenthal Award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a National Book Award for her novel Them.

In addition to her work as an author, Oates is the Roger S. Berlind Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Princeton University.

The Stieren Arts Enrichment Series brings a distinguished array of outstanding leaders in the fields of art, music, drama, literature, communication, art history, and aesthetics to Trinity.  The series is made possible through an endowment created by Jane and Arthur Stieren of San Antonio.  For more information, call the Trinity English department at (210) 999-7517.
