Trinity Student Wins First-Ever Musical Composition Competition

Sept. 23, 2002 – J.R. Paredes, a Trinity University student from Houston, Texas, has won the first-ever music composition contest sponsored by the Orpheus Alliance, a virtual music department comprised of academic institutions belonging to the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS).  Mr. Paredes’ work, titled “Distorted Reflections and Mirror Images: Two movements for flute, cello, and piano,” won first place honors out of a field of 16 entries from seven institutions. The announcement was made during the summer at the First Annual ACS New Music Festival held at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.

Mr. Paredes is a student of Trinity associate professor and composer-in-residence Timothy Kramer. Mr. Paredes began composing his work while a first-year student at Trinity and finished it during his sophomore year. The composition was performed at the ACS New Music Festival by Trinity faculty members Carolyn True and Tal Perkes as well as Houston Symphony cellist Fred Edelen.

“I think it is a wonderful work,” said Professor Kramer. “I have high hopes for him.” Before coming to Trinity, Mr. Paredes attended Cypress Creek High School.
