| TRINITY STUDENT CHOSEN FOR STATE DEPARTMENT FELLOWSHIP |
|
As part of the fellowship, Miss Selmon, a junior pursuing a double major in international studies and political science with a minor in Spanish, will enter the Foreign Service with the State Department after she completes her undergraduate and graduate studies. In addition to financial aid for tuition and fees, room and board, and travel, she will receive annual State Department orientations and paid summer internships in Washington, D.C., and at a U.S. embassy overseas. “I hope to achieve a better understanding of the world around me, of how foreign countries interact, and of how diplomatic relations are created and sustained throughout the globe,” says Miss Selmon, whose career goal is to be a U.S. Foreign Service officer, and ultimately, a United States ambassador. The daughter of Dewey and Kathryn Selmon, Miss Selmon is a graduate of Norman High School in suburban Oklahoma City, Okla. Growing up, she wanted to be a history teacher but changed her mind when she went abroad during high school. “I have wanted to work for the State Department ever since,” Miss Selmon says. The Pickering Fellowship is named after career ambassador Thomas R. Pickering, who is viewed by State Department officials as a leader among the agency’s Diplomatic Corps for his talent and commitment to the Foreign Service. The fellowship is designed to encourage college sophomores to consider a career in the Foreign Service. Trinity University, founded in 1869, is a highly selective, professionally oriented liberal arts and sciences institution. This residential, primarily undergraduate coeducational university is noted for its superb facilities and undergraduate research opportunities. It is a learning community that has charted its course with a steadfast commitment to excellence for more than 130 years.
