May 13, 2000  - Gerald Pitts, Caruth Distinguished Professor of Computer Science, received the Dr. & Mrs. Z.T. Scott Faculty Fellowship Award during Trinity University's spring commencement ceremony on May 13, 2000.  The Z.T. Scott Fellowship, given annually for excellence in teaching, advising, and service to students, includes a $5,500 cash award and an additional $3,500 to be used for professional development.

"Professor Pitts is described by his students as compassionate but firm, and one who pushes them to do the best job they can," says Charles White, interim vice president of academic affairs.  "He is known as a scholar, teacher, advisor, guidance counselor, and job placement officer.  In short, he embodies excellence in teaching and advising."

In receiving the award, Pitts expressed a deep appreciation for being recognized.  "I have great admiration for those who have received this award each year and am privileged to be in their company.  Trinity has outstanding faculty, and to be singled out is an exceptional honor."

Pitts joined the Trinity faculty in 1981 after holding tenured positions at Mississippi State University and Texas Tech University.  He received his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University and has published more than 100 papers and three books.  Recognized as an expert in the applications of virtual reality, his simulation/modeling research spans more than thirty years since his involvement with the Apollo space program at NASA.  Pitts' other major research interest involves intelligent agents (providing intelligent objects in virtual worlds).
