| Trinity Appoints Director of Career Services |
|
Gage Paine, vice president of student affairs, said as director of the new Office of Career Services, Ms. Spurlock will develop programs to launch college students on a lifetime career path, which is much larger than the traditional view of job placement. We would be doing students a disservice if we only helped them find their first jobs, Dr. Paine says. Many of them will have jobs, in a few years, that do not exist yet. We want to be able to help them manage their careers over their lifetime. Dr. Paine said Ms. Spurlock, who has been assistant director of career services at St. Mary's University since June 1999, has the energy and vision to create a new program. She will bring broader and more comprehensive thinking to Trinity's Career Services, Dr. Paine says. At St. Mary's, Ms. Spurlock advised students and alumni on job searches, internships, and graduate schools while conducting workshops on such career-related areas as resume writing, interviewing, networking and salary negotiation. She holds a master's degree in counseling and guidance from Southwest Texas State University and currently is working toward a doctorate in educational administration from Texas A&M University. Previously, she was an academic counselor at the University of Texas at San Antonio and a residential college coordinator at Southwest Texas State University. According to Ms. Spurlock, Career Services will assist students, alumni, employers, faculty, and the University community in developing lifelong career development skills by providing outstanding advising, services, programs, and resources. We will accomplish this through developing internships and experiential education opportunities and career and life planning programs, as well as job and graduate school search assistance. Trinity University, founded in 1869, is a highly selective, professionally oriented liberal arts and sciences institution. This residential, primarily undergraduate coeducational university is noted for its superb facilities and undergraduate research opportunities. It is a learning community that has charted its course with a steadfast commitment to excellence for more than 130 years. |
