Archeologist To Discuss The Progress Of Uncovering
The Lydian Empire In Western Turkey

October 26, 2000 - An archeologist will highlight the research gleaned from the public and private areas of Sardis, the capital of the Lydian Empire of western Turkey, as part of a presentation sponsored by Southwest Texas Archaeological Society.  The University of Wisconsin's Nick Cahill will speak on "Recent Fieldwork at Sardis, The City of Croesus" on Thursday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapman Center Auditorium.  This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Cahill's recent research has concentrated on a fortification built and maintained during the period of Alyattes and Croesus, and on its destruction at the hands of Cyrus of Persia in 546 B.C.  A royal cemetery and public buildings dating from the 6th century B.C. have also been explored in recent years.

The event is sponsored by the Southwest Texas Archeological Society and the Trinity University Department of Classical Studies.  For more information, call (210) 999-7653.
