Trinity University Accepts Gift From SBC Foundation

Trinity President John Brazil and SBC External Affairs Director Gene Moreno
July 17, 2002 The SBC Foundation has donated the fourth installment of a five-year $500,000 pledge to Trinity University for capital building projects.

Gene Moreno, director of external affairs for SBC in San Antonio, presented a $100,000 check to John Brazil, president of Trinity University, in a brief ceremony Thursday, July 11, in Dr. Brazil’s office. The donation will be used toward the construction of the University’s new Northrup Hall that will open in 2004 as an administration and academic building that will become the centerpiece of the 117-acre campus just north of downtown San Antonio.

The SBC Foundation made its initial pledge to Trinity University in 1999 to continue through 2003. “We’re extremely committed to the community since we are based here as a corporation,” Mr. Moreno said. “This is a win-win situation. The parents in this community with young people who are students here win, and the community receives an excellent workforce.”

Dr. Brazil noted that Trinity has had “a distinguished history,” which has been enhanced by the philanthropy of such organizations as the SBC Foundation. “SBC is an important member of the community, as is Trinity,” Dr. Brazil said.

Demolition of the old Northrup Hall is under way. The New York firm of Robert A. M. Stern Architects is designing the new $23 million building. The design will provide a new front door to the Trinity campus and create an immediately recognizable symbol that will join with the University's Murchison Tower and the Margarite B. Parker Chapel as the primary architectural focal points. The compact, four-story building will contain two wings connected by a central lobby on each floor and a glass-enclosed grand staircase that runs through the entire building. An acequia-like waterway will figure prominently in the entrance to the new structure.

Trinity University is a nationally recognized liberal arts and sciences institution noted for its exceptional faculty and commitment to the comprehensive preparation of its talented student body. It is a learning community that has charted its course with a steadfast commitment to excellence since it was founded in 1869.
