Oct. 21, 2002Trinity University’s speech and drama department will present The School for Scandal, a tragicomedy by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. This play revolves around  the two very different Surface brothers who are not all they appear to be on the surface.  The play will be presented in the Jane and Arthur Stieren Theater on Nov. 15-16 at 8 p.m., Nov. 17 at 2:30 p.m., Nov. 20 at 7 p.m., and Nov. 21-23 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 for regular admission, $5 for senior citizens/faculty/staff, and $4 for students. Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made by calling the Stieren Theater Box Office at (210) 999-8515.

The play, considered to be one of the finest of late 18th century British comedies, revolves around Lady Sneerwell’s house, which becomes the school for all kinds of gossiping and rumor-mongering as Charles and Joseph Surface maneuver to win the affections of Maria, the ward of Sir Peter Teazle.  Sir Peter, meanwhile, believes that Charles has designs on his wife, Lady Teazle.  And when the Surface brothers’ uncle, Sir Oliver, returns from India in disguise, the plot takes a turn toward the hilarious.

Sabin Epstein, one of America’s leading stage directors of classical drama and resident director of San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theatre, will direct. Mr. Epstein comes to Trinity as part of the Stieren Arts Enrichment Series.
