| Noted Artist Joan Semmel to Give Overview of Her Career in Stieren Event |
| March 10, 2000 - Painter Joan Semmel, who reshaped ideas on the treatment of the nude figure on canvas, will present highlights of her notable career during a presentation at Trinity University. The event is part of Trinity's Stieren Arts Enrichment Series and will take place on Monday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapman Center Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.
After earning her undergraduate degree from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, Semmel moved to Madrid, Spain and created bold, abstract expressionist work. She later returned to New York to complete her graduate degree and encountered the growing feminist movement. Her paintings became figurative and erotic, centering on the female nude from a women's point of view. Semmel's redefining of the nude established her as one of America's most significant figurative painters of the 20th century. Semmel's work is represented in major permanent collections in the United States and abroad, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Valencia, Spain; the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston; and the Museum of Women in Arts in Washington, D.C.
