TRINITY COMMUNICATION STUDENTS WIN

May 10, 2002 – Students from Trinity University’s communication department have won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (S.P.J.). The awards were given recently at the S.P.J. Region 8 conference Mark of Excellence luncheon held in San Antonio. The Mark of Excellence luncheon honors the best in student journalism in the categories of newspapers, magazines, photography, and television. Material had to be published or aired during 2001. Region 8 consists of colleges and universities in Texas and Oklahoma. Susan Currie won first place in the Magazine Nonfiction Article Category for a story titled “Exploring the Wonderful Inis Oirr.” The article was a first-person travel article about spending time on an Irish island. It was published in the Spring 2001 Skyline, a student-produced magazine. Ms. Currie graduated from Trinity in May 2001 with a degree in English. Sara Kaviani won third place in the Magazine Nonfiction Article Category for a story titled "Anti-Efficiency: A Guide to Relaxation and Sloth." The unconventional how-to article was also published in the Spring 2001 Skyline magazine. Ms. Kaviani is a senior with a double major in English and communication. She is also the editor of the Mirage, Trinity’s yearbook. In addition, the Spring 2001 issue of Skyline magazine also won second place in the Student Magazine Published Once A Year Category. The winning awards will now compete for national honors against 11 other regional winners across the United States.
