ACCLAIMED ARTIST TO DISCUSS ABSTRACT PAINTING AND FEMINISM

Artist Linda BesemerMarch 5, 2002  – Linda Besemer, a Los Angeles-based artist whose abstract relief paintings have received international acclaim, will present an illustrated lecture titled “Formalism, Feminism, and Postmodernism: Uneasy Bedfellows in the New Millennium or Familiar Foes?” The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 25 in the Chapman Center Auditorium.  The presentation is part of Trinity’s Stieren Arts Enrichment Series.

During her presentation, Professor Besemer will trace the evolution of her work in the context of critical thought that holds abstract work and feminism as seemingly irreconcilable.

Professor Besemer teaches courses in painting, drawing, critical theory, and gender studies at Occidental College.  She holds a M.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and a B.F.A. from Indiana University in Bloomington. Professor Besemer’s work has been widely exhibited, notably at the 2000 “Biennial” exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Frankfurt International Art Fair. In 1999, she was the recipient of a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant.  Art in America critic Michael Duncan has noted, “In her work, pattern, color and painted form become a malleable, living process that –amazingly--seems ripe for further experimentation.”
